32nd Kano State Executive Council Meeting

The Kano State Executive Council held its sitting for thirty-two times on 25th January, 2012 (2nd Rabi’ul Awwal 1433 AH) and approved the following submission
   





  1. 1.    MINISTRY OF WORKS, HOUSING AND TRANSPORT
Following the approval for the employment of additional 250 traffic assistants, which brings the number to a total of 500, the Council considered it imperative to approve the purchase of a fairly-used heavy duty towing truck at the sum of Nine Million Naira (N9,000,000.00) in order to support their operations.

This approval is aimed at clearing the roads of broken down vehicles in order to ease traffic flow on the metropolitan roads.

  1. 2.    MINISTRY OF HEALTH
As part of the present administration’s effort in healthcare delivery programmes for the people of the state, the Council has approved the sum of Twenty Two Million, Three Hundred and Seventy Three Thousand, One Hundred and Nineteen Thousand Naira and Seventy Seven Kobo (N22,373,119.77) for landscaping/interlocking and general rehabilitation works at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital.

It can be recalled that the Council, during its previous sittings, had approved a contract for landscaping/interlocking of seven hospitals in the first phase of the hospital beautification project.

Also approved to the Ministry of Health is the sum of One Hundred and Nineteen Million, Eight Hundred and Fifty Five Thousand Naira (N119,855,000.00) for the procurement of 10 Emergency Response Ambulances to serve at seven major highways in the state. Apart from the provision of emergency medical assistance to accident victims, the Emergency Response Ambulances will also be used in the newly-introduced Mobile Health Services programme, which will cover the three Senatorial Districts of the state.

Council noted that the decision was informed by the present administration’s determination to make access to healthcare services faster, easier and efficient in the remote areas of the state.

  1. 3.    MINISTRY OF JUSTICE
Council noted the need for an enabling law that will see to the reduction in rampant violation of traffic laws, accidents and road congestions.

This, therefore, necessitated the approval of the proposed Kano State Traffic Management Authority (KASTMA) Bill 2011 by the Council, for submission to the State House of Assembly.

Council believed that the enactment of the law will give the agency the power to arrest and prosecute violators of traffic laws. The agency will also have the power to impound, tow away broken down and violators’ vehicles from the roads.

While deliberating on the proposed law, the Council established an EXCO Committee comprising the Honorable Commissioners of Works, Housing and Transport, Science and Technology and Special Duties to study and advise the Council on the bill.

  1. 4.    MINISTRY OF SPECIAL DUTIES
The Council received a report from a committee set up to improve the operations of private health institutions.

While approving the outlined interim report presented by the committee, Council directed the committee to expedite action in order to submit its report on time.

  1. 5.    MINISTRY OF EDUCATION
Following the submission of a progress report on the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) projects, which identified eight (8) Kwankwasiyya model classrooms that are yet to take-off, the Council considered the need for additional storey blocks of four (4) classrooms with two (2) offices, to be located at the three (3) Senatorial Districts of the state.

In a related development, an updated report on the activities of the office of the Senior Special Assistant on Community Schools and Voluntary Services has been submitted. The Council noted the report and commended the sensitization programmes initiated by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant.

  1. 6.    CONDOLENCE MESSAGE
The Council wishes to extend its sympathy to the entire people of Kano Sate over the recent multiple bomb blasts that rocked the state last Friday. The Council also reiterated government’s commitment to provide support for the families of the deceased and those that sustained injuries as a result of the attacks.

The Council further urged the public to be alert and cooperate with the security agencies in making the state safer and peaceful.
